Artpie

Attending: 2019 Steppin Up Gala Fundraiser for the Artists for Humanity

About: I am a versatile artist, specializing in painting, drawing and digital art. I have had many creative endeavors throughout my professional life and now have the time and opportunity to share my artwork with a broader audience. In 2017, I developed Artpie Studio/Gallery/Art School in Waukegan, IL to create more focused artworks on a more regular basis. Proceeds from my artwork help support free creative workshops for under-resourced students in urban areas.

I use layering, spreading, and scraping of oil paints and/or acrylics allowing the paint to produce unanticipated events on canvas or wood. I began my abstract painting style after studying David Alfaro Siqueiros and Gerhardt Richter. I admired the Siqueiros murals but it was his discovery and experimentation in fluid, accidental painting in the 1930s that captivated me.

Now you can see all types of Paint Pouring on YouTube, but Siqueiros was the first! I also loved the freeness and ease of the Richter abstracts! Experimenting with materials and techniques allows for unique results, rich in texture and mystery.

Hands of Imani

Attending: 2019 Steppin Up Gala Fundraiser for the Artists for Humanity

About: We are a mother and daughter team who have decided to work together and create art. For many years I have worked with my own mother Doris E. Jones Founder of “Artist in the Park” in Roxbury’s Monroe Park as named by the neighborhood (Horacio Park). My mother introduced the arts to each generation of our family and for that we all thank her.

I have always had an interest but it was until I had a medical emergency that turned my life around and set me on a new path with Gods direction.  A new passion for art and jewelry making has awake in me and some nights I don’t even sleep because of the ideas that flow through my head. My eyesight is not the best at this time and my daughter has begun to assist me with my projects the fine designs to completion.

Lkaycollections

Attending: 2019 Steppin Up Gala Fundraiser for the Artists for Humanity

About: As an immigrant born in Uganda, Africa – Lydia Kwagala was raised by her grandmother in a small town called Jinja which is famous for being the source of the Nile River.

Growing up with her grandmother, she played a big role in creating LKAYCOLLECTIONS. Lydia watched her grandmother (who was a teacher) design and sew clothes for her less fortunate students and interested residents. The meticulous way her grandmother would pick a print and blend different patterns made Lydia fall more in love with fashion. It was the determination and dedication that her grandmother put into sewing that inspired Lydia to pursue a career in design.

Lydia would take the extra scraps from her grandmother’s sewing projects to design clothes for her little dolls. And during her high school days in Uganda, Lydia continued to explore her passion for design.

Lydia welcomed her beautiful baby girl into the world on 3/1/2016, and it is then that she conceived the idea to start sketching MUMMY & ME outfits for the two of them. This new idea drove her to bring her sewing dreams to life and with each passing day Lydia’s skills and passion expanded and eventually grew into LKAYCOLLECTIONS.

Today through her fashion line, Lydia shares the beauty of blending Ankara prints with a modern twist; making every girl and woman feel beautiful and comfortable in their own skin.
